Blog Post #5 The sub-genre psychological horror is a very popular sub-genre for fans of horror films. This sub-genre focuses on the mental, psychological, and emotional states of the characters in the film that they go through by using them to relate and scare the audience. The Black Swan is a good example of psychological horror. Throughout the film, the audience learns that the main character Nina struggles with multiple issues, an eating disorder, and obsessions with dancing and perfectionism. Nina also lives with her mother who portrays elements of mental illness: a narcissistic personality and depressive features. In this clip of The Black Swan, they use cinematography when Nina sees her reflection be out of sink with her, by showing that she is becoming detached to herself and doesn't really feel like herself anymore after all the training she has been doing to become one with the black swan.
